PHOTO GALLERY: Man City’s stadium structure praised by Royal Institute of British Architects over 20 years

The Etihad. Our Home. Simple as that.

In August 2003, City relocated to what was then known as City of Manchester Stadium, ending an illustrious 80-year stint at our beloved Maine Road.

This brand-new facility, a 38,000-seat arena constructed for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, was expanded to a 48,000-seat stadium in time for our 2003–04 season.

Breathing new life into the East area of the city, the stadium’s innovative and inclusive design earned acclaim from the Institution of Structural Engineers in 2003 and Royal Institute of British Architects in 2004 and has since also earned praise for its commitment to the environment, sustainability and accessibility.

Even this year, plans to develop of a best-in-class fan experience and year-round entertainment and leisure destination at the Etihad Stadium have been approved by Manchester City Council’s planning committee.
