As revealed by Fabrizio Romano, the reality is that it is not a versatile defender like Jurrien Timber, but Arsenal have targeted a traditional central defender when just entering the summer transfer window.

Arsenal transfer news: Laporte could replace Timber

Romano insists that the Gunners’ top target is Aymeric Laporte, but Manchester City do not want another player of their own to move to the Emirates.

The Italian journalist said:

“Earlier in the summer, Arsenal considered bringing in a ‘traditional’ centre-back rather than a versatile player like Jurrien Timber who can play anywhere in the defence.”

“A player they really appreciate is Aymeric Laporte, this is true, but from what I heard, Man City didn’t want to sell one more player to Arsenal, they prefer a different destination for Laporte.”

“So let’s wait and see if Arsenal return to Laporte or they will try to replace Timber with another full-back. Internal discussions will take place on this matter, with the participation of Mikel Arteta.”
