Manchester United will be eager to play better against Tottenham on Saturday after escaping with a fairly fortunate three points against Wolves. Erik ten Hag may make adjustments after seeing how his team performed against Wolves, especially when choosing his frontline, in an effort to revitalize his team. We take a look at the Dutch manager’s potential starting lineup.
Goalkeeper – Andre Onana
Until United gets a new No. 2, it is difficult to envision Andre Onana not playing in every Premier League game this season. The former Ajax star showed glimpses of why the Red Devils paid £47.2 million for him this summer against Wolves, and he is expected to play a significant role against Tottenham as well. Onana will also be attempting to avoid attention after knocking down Sasa Kalajdzic of the Wolves in what PMGOL think should have been a penalty.
Defence: Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw
Due to a minor injury, Lisandro Martinez was substituted by Victor Lindelof at halftime against Wolves; however, the Argentina international has since returned to training, and Ten Hag has stated that he ‘thinks’ he will be fine. Therefore, it seems unlikely that United would make any alterations to their defensive line, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka serving as the ideal fullback to try to contain Heung-Min Son.
Midfield: Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen
Mason Mount has struggled to make any kind of impact against Wolves, however, speaking at his pre-match press conference, Ten Hag remained supportive of Mason Mount. As a result, Masin looks set to still be part of United’s midfield trio with Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro.
Forwards: Antony, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford
With Rasmus Hojlund still ruled out through injury, Ten Hag will be relying on one of his wingers to lead the line against Tottenham. Marcus Rashford was uncharacteristically ineffective through the middle against Wolves, and it may be wise for the No 10 to play in his preferred position to avoid a downturn in form.
Jadon Sancho could lead the line for United
Given that Alejandro Garnacho was equally underwhelming, bringing Jadon Sancho back into the United attack to play as a makeshift striker may be the next step for Ten Hag. The ex-Borussia Dortmund star was trialled in the role throughout pre-season and emerged with credit, though this will be a significantly different task.
