Mason Mount was a trending topic on social media for all the wrong reasons on Saturday, August 19 after Manchester United fell to a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

After eking out a 1-0 victory against Wolves in their opening five days prior, the Red Devils entered the game looking to make it two wins in a row.
Both teams had chances in the first half of a sometimes chaotic encounter, and while United was guilty of some timidity in front of goal, the home team was unfortunate to hit the post twice in a span of 10 seconds late in the first half thanks to Pedro Porro and a deflection from Luke Shaw.

Tottenham, under a new era in the absence of Harry Kane, eventually took the lead through Pape Matar Sarr, who drilled a shot high into the net from close range, as cited on BBC.
On 83 minutes, Spurs made it 2-0 as Ivan Perisic’s cross went in via Lisandro Martinez for an own goal after taking a touch off Ben Davies.
Mount angers fans

As the game clocked full time, Manchester United fans had the same observation as many felt the midfield was lacking.

Casemiro appeared lethargic and at times lost, while Mason Mount, who was a wonderkid at Chelsea, did not make any significant contribution to the game.

.

For this reason, it came as a surprise to many Manchester United fans when Mount was spotted laughing with new Tottenham signing James Maddison at full time.
Here are some reactions from fans, who saw the images:
The first to say: “If I were Mason Mount, I wouldn’t be laughing and smiling after that performance.”
Next person: “Why is he smiling after unironically dropping two of the worst midfield performances i’ve seen in recent times?”
The third person asked: “Getting Mason Mount for £55m when James Maddison was available for £40m shows how clueless Erik Ten Haag is/was. I still can’t understand why Man United signed Mount, what for exactly?”
The fourth person is angry: “Mason Mount cannot be serious man, why is he smiling after that performance? Have some shame.”
