Mason Greenwood’s football career ended in a Man United shirt. After a long period of internal investigation, considering the situation, the Old Trafford team and Greenwood personally decided to “go their separate ways”.

This is considered the best solution for both parties. Going back in time, Man United ‘frozen’ Greenwood’s career in January 2022 after allegations against the English striker of harassing, raping and assaulting a young woman.

In February 2023, the Public Prosecution Service announced that Greenwood was found not guilty. However, the career of the 21-year-old striker has been seriously affected. Sharing with Sky Sports, former player Gary Neville commented:

“Yes, I think [they made the right decision]. It was clear from day one, to me and to everyone who saw what was released, that he would never play for Manchester United.

“They got there, but I would say the process to get there was pretty horrible. I think when you have important and difficult situations like this, it requires strong and authoritative leadership and it comes from the very top and Manchester United don’t have that.

“And on an issue like domestic ɑbuse and ʋiolence against women, that brings me to a third point: it takes independence.”

“It shouldn’t be that Manchester United are judge and jury on such a significant issue. Not just for themselves, but also for the game. People talk about the reputation to Manchester United, but it’s the Premier League here as well.

“My issue is, on issues of this importance and severity, they should be dealing with independently by a panel, because it’s been clear that Manchester United have not had the skill and the ability to deal with this situation properly. It’s been well above their grade of experience and ability.”
