Ex-Man Utd player Mason Greenwood declared ‘I’m happy to be here’ as he’s officially unveiled with Getafe after club slammed as ‘tone deaf’

MASON Greenwood has praised his “amazing first day” as he was officially unveiled by his new club Getafe.

The La Liga side presented the 21-year-old striker in front of a raucous crowd at the Coliseum stadium in Madrid.

Thousands of eager Getafe fans turned out on a warm evening to welcome Greenwood and fellow new signings Diego Rico and Oscar Rodriguez.

The forward has since taken to social media to describe his Getafe presentation as an “amazing first day” among a montage of images.

Greenwood’s post has already racked up nearly 200,000 likes after being provided with a pathway back to football by the La Liga side.

The new signing waved to the crowd and kicked a signed football into the stand during the presentation.

And the striker told the crowd that he is “happy to be here” for the season ahead.

Greenwood added: “I have been training for four or five months now so I am getting up to speed.

“I have been training with my team-mates and I feel quite good.

“We take one game at a time, I know the next home game is coming up soon, we are going to try and win it and do our best.”

Prior to his formal introduction, it was also confirmed that Greenwood’s girlfriend had arrived in Spain.

In a snapshot posted to her Instagram, Harriet Robson, the footballer’s baby mother, could be seen giggling in the sunshine.

Earlier today, Getafe were criticized as “tone deaf” after a video of the striker signing autographs and introducing himself to fans before his debut surfaced.

Getafe posted a video of Greenwood posing for pictures with kids and signing their footballs and shirts on Twitter.

One fan had already acquired a replica of Greenwood’s number 12 shirt, which he donned backwards and bear hugged the striker.

However, Greenwood’s exuberant greeting by the team has drawn heavy criticism on social media.

Popular account Out of Context Football Manager tweeted: “Getafe have to be the most tone deaf club I’ve ever seen in my life. Read the room.”

Today, more than 18 months after his final match for Manchester United, Greenwood participated in his first training session with his new club Getafe.

Since he appears to be concentrating on strength and conditioning in his training videos, it is exceedingly improbable that Greenwood is match fit.

Just minutes before Friday’s deadline for the summer transfer window, the Spanish club made the announcement.

United will pay the majority of his £75,000 weekly salary while he is in Spain and will not be charged a loan fee.

A club statement added: “The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United.

“The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition.”

But the young forward may not make his debut until September 17, when Getafe host Osasuna.

Following an internal investigation into his detention, United had already said that Greenwood and the club had “mutually agreed” to part ways.

He was detained in October of last year, but the Crown Prosecution Service withdrew all charges in February.

Greenwood has two more years to go, and the club has the option of extending it by another year if they so want.

If the club had not been able to sell him, they would have been on the hook for over £8 million.
