David Bingham and Timbers Secure a 2-0 Shutout Against LAFC

Portland Timbers won 2-0 over Los Angeles FC on the road thanks to goals from Larrys Mabiala and Claudio Bravo.

The Timbers (8-11-9, 33 points) won 1-0 thanks to a shutout by David Bingham, who made two saves, to improve to 2-1-1 under interim coach Miles Joseph and move within one point of the ninth and last Western Conference playoff spot.

Los Angeles FC fell to 11-9-7, 40 points, and stayed tied for third place in the West with Real Salt Lake.

In the 28th minute, Mabiala put LAFC ahead after goalkeeper John McCarthy made a couple of mistakes.

A lob into the penalty area was first mishandled by McCarthy, who ran out to receive the ball but saw it bounce past him. With the goal wide open, Portland’s Felipe Mora tried to get a foot on the ball, but defender Aaron Long got to it first and pushed it out of play.

Kellyn Acosta of LAFC headed away the subsequent corner kick from the right flank to the far post, giving Portland another corner from the opposite wing.

Evander’s left-wing corner hit McCarthy in the hands and rebounded off the grass before rolling into the back of the goal. Mabiala fought off LAFC midfielder Ilie Sanchez for the ball and powered a header over the goal line and into the back of the net.

After a fumble by LAFC near midfield in the 53rd minute, Bravo scored to make it 2-0. Before Bravo’s goal, the Timbers passed the ball five times in rapid succession to get it to the top of the 18-yard box, where he dribbled near the penalty spot and rolled a left-footed effort under McCarthy’s dive.

In the 44th minute, McCarthy made the sole save of the first half, a diving save to his left and right to deny Moreno’s attempt from the top center of the 18-yard box.

McCarthy made three stops in the win.
