As the Gunners dominated Saka 4-0 in their comeback to the European league, Dest was left chasing ghosts.
Arsenal returned to Europe’s premier competition with a bang, beating 4-0 at the Emirates to get off to a fantastic start in the Champions League. On the other hand, PSV’s worst came true on Wednesday night in London when the defense repeatedly caved in.
Dest struggled greatly on the defensive end while facing off against Arsenal’s star forward Saka, as did the majority of his teammates. The game’s lopsided outcome will do a lot of damage to PSV’s confidence as this group stage gets off.
PSV had a terrible night because they gave up a lot in the first 45 minutes. This will be remembered as a defensive catastrophe class, with Dest making up a large portion of a complete mess on that side of the field.
The Gunners took the lead after only eight minutes when Saka sprinted past an unobservant Dest to score off a rebound close to the goal.
Leandro Trossard, who had been set up by Saka on a brilliant counterattack, doubled Arsenal’s advantage in the 20th minute.
Dest was again near the action when Arsenal scored their third goal, but he was unable to save Gabriel Jesus’ effort in the 38th minute.
In the 70th minute, Martin Odegaard added a fourth and final goal by blasting a missile from outside the box to seal a lopsided win for the hosts.
Dest had a difficult night because all of his flaws were on full show.
Dest’s defensive prowess was always going to be put to the test as he started slightly out of position on the left and against Saka, and on this particular day, he failed miserably. Saka was involved in two of the three goals, and Jesus’ finish was off the post, so Arsenal had a field day down that left side.
Dest performed admirably on the ball, completing almost 90% of his passes, and had some promising moments in attack, but it’s tough to overlook such a poor defensive performance from a player who has undoubtedly had a few of them throughout his career.
