Liverpool fans have believe they have found the perfect player to finally fill Steven Gerrard’s number eight shirt in Dominik Szoboszlai, after his Carabao Cup stunner against Leicester.
The Hungarian hit a stunning strike as the Reds came from behind once again to beat the Foxes 3-1 at Anfield and book their place in the competition’s fourth round.
All the talk after the match was about Szoboszlai’s goal of the season contender, as he rifled in a shot from just outside the box that crashed into the net off the underside of the bar.
It was the 22-year-old’s second goal in Liverpool colours, following his move from RB Leipzig in the summer, and it brought comparisons to one of the club’s greatest ever number eights, in Steven Gerrard.
Fans took to social media to praise the midfielder and to suggest they had finally found an heir to the former Liverpool captain.

Szoboszlai’s goal and performance have seen him being described as a ‘Steven Gerrard regen’
The thunderbolt was likened to one of Steven Gerrard’s strikes wearing the number eight shirt
‘Ladies and Gentlemen. We found him. We found the Gerrard Regen’ one post read as they added a side-by-side image of the two players in similar celebrating stance.
Another fan echoed the same sentiment by posting matching images of Szobozslai and Gerrard shaping to shoot, alongside the caption ‘We have our own Gerrard regen.’

Liverpool fans took to social media to declare Szoboszlai as the heir to Steven Gerrard
‘I have already seen enough of Dominik Szoboszlai to tell you that he is the closest thing to Steven Gerrard that I’ve seen since his retirement.
Szoboszlai will be in the Kevin De Bryune and Eden Hazard category in no time. And if he stays at Liverpool for a 5-6 years, he will be in the Gerrard, Scholes, Lampard conversation. You heard it here first.
Unreal talent, great attitude and the best coach behind him – Sky is the limit.’
In his more than 700 games for Liverpool, Gerrard scored 185 goals, helped the team win two FA Cups, three League Cups, the UEFA Cup, and that memorable night in Istanbul in 2005 when they defeated AC Milan after falling down by three goals to win the Champions League.
Although Szoboszlai still has a ways to go before matching such achievements, he did assist Liverpool in turning around their Carabao Cup match after Jurgen Klopp’s team fell behind early on thanks to a Kasey McAteer goal.
The Foxes had a 1-0 lead at the interval, but goals from Cody Gakpo, Szoboszlai’s worldie, and Diogo Jota in the second half changed the tide and secured their spot against Bournemouth in the fourth round.
