Trent Alexander-Arnold has responded in hilariously brutal fashion to James Maddison’s replay jibe following the controversial Premier League clash between Tottenham and Liverpool. In the first half of the game, VAR incorrectly disallowed a Luis Diaz goal for offside before Spurs went on to win in the final minutes.
As a result of a decision significantly affecting the outcome of the match, calls for a replay were rather prominent with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp also holding that belief. “As far as I can remember, something like that never happened, that’s why I think a replay should be played,” he said in a press conference the following week after the Tottenham defeat.
“They didn’t do it on purpose and we shouldn’t forget that. Yes, it was a mistake. An obvious mistake. I think there would have been solutions. I think the outcome should be a replay. Probably won’t happen.” While it was a very serious topic at the time, with many pundits and experts delivering their respective verdicts, now the dust has settled Maddison chose to tease Alexander-Arnold on England duty.
On Instagram, the Tottenham midfielder posted a story showing himself and the Liverpool man in conversation as he captioned the post, “still asking for a replay [tired emoji, laughing emoji and red heart emoji]”. Of course, it is highly unlikely that was the actual topic being discussed by the duo, and with that, Alexander-Arnold has now provided his own version of events.
In a TikTok posted to Channel4sport, Alexander-Arnold was being interviewed by Kelly Sommers where he explains what he was actually telling Maddison. “No, he was asking me how to teach him how to put a free kick in the top corner,” the 25-year-old revealed with a wry smile when asked if there was a replay conversation ongoing.
“But, I just showed him the video of when I scored at Leicester last year and they got relegated.”
.
Liverpool defeated the Foxes 3-0 in mid-May. Alexander-Arnold scored the third goal after Curtis Jones’ first-half double. This loss was part of the reason Maddison’s old team was relegated.
Alexander-Arnold’s response to what actually happened is also likely not the case, but he has certainly not taken the shot from Maddison lying down. Over the coming days, the duo will have to put their tongue in-cheek back-and-forth to one side as England take on Australia and Italy.
