Nestled in the Schulenburg mountain (about an hour by bus from Hanover), Marienburg is likened to the Neuschwanstein castle of Northern Germany. With its Gothic-style watchtowers and walls, Marienburg looks like a real-life version of the castle in Walt Disney’s animated film “Sleeping Beauty”.
Marienburg Castle is a testament to the love between King George V – the last king of the House of Hanover and Queen Marie of Saxe-Altenburg. On the Queen’s 39th birthday, King George V gave this castle to her. Queen Marie loved this Gothic-style castle very much. She lived here until 1866 when King George V went into exile.

Since then, Marienburg Castle has fallen into a deep sleep that has lasted more than 140 years. It was not until 2004 that signs of life returned here. Today, the castle has become a famous tourist destination in Lower Saxony.
