Speaking after the nervy victory, United boss Ten Hag said: “I didn’t see it. The referee probably didn’t see it either. I don’t know.”

Harry Maguire’s goal in the second half gave Man Utd the victory, 1-0.

In Group A, the Red Devils are now third, behind Bayern Munich and Galatasaray.

Maguire, who scored the game’s opening goal, said to TNT Sports: “Incredible. We need to be more decisive; in the second half, we had multiple counterattacks and didn’t give them a chance.

“The first-half was really poor, it was not perfect but an important win. This man [Andre Onana] stepped up and it was a massive save.”

Man Utd honoured club legend Sir Bobby Charlton before kιck-off.

The 1966 World Cup hero passed away on Saturday after a three-year bаttle with dementia.

Before the match, both teams observed a minute of silence and Erik ten Hag carried a wreath to the centre circle alongside Man Utd Under-19’s captain Dan Gore and Alex Stepney, a former team-mate of Sir Bobby.

Discussing the importance of the result and the evening, Maguire added: “It was meant to be. We were meant to win the game, a magnificent save and a win dedicated to Sir Bobby and his family.

“It has been a tough week for us away at Sheffield United and losing someone like Sir Bobby, it affects the cub and the dressing room. But really pleased we could get the win tonight.”
