Even though I live in Brooklyn and like basketball, I’m not interested in the Brooklyn Nets. Spike Lee lives in Brooklyn and feels the same way about the borough’s NBA team. I’m a Wizards fan and he’s a Knicks fan. The Nets are probably the only thing we have in common. On top of that, they have always loved movies.

An ornately decorated house on an otherwise ordinary residential block is likely to be seen on a walk through Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood (I don’t really call it that; I just save time in text messages). In this building is Lee’s film company, 40 Acres and Mule Filmworks. This is where the “Joints” are made.

A big part of many Spike Lee movies is how New York City is shown as a live, breathing character.The setting for Do the Right Thing was only possible in Bedford-Stuyvesant in the late 1980s.The movie He Got Game shows what Coney Island is all about. Lee made his most popular and widely seen movie to date in 2006, which also had the most theater showings. Inside Man was a movie about a bank robbery that starred Clive Owen and Denzel Washington. It was set in the huge city of Manhattan. It’s like the spiritual follow-up to famous bank-robbing movies like Sidney Lumet’s Dog Day Afternoon (“Attica!”), and it even has some appearances by actors from that movie.
