Barbados, a small Caribbean island, is known for Mount Gay rum and Rihanna, a national hero during the 2021 republic ceremony. This 167-square-mile island, a British winter sun destination, has a hospitality culture as powerful as its rum. Many high-end resorts are on the party-packed south coast, but most are on the west coast, known as the “platinum coast”. Fewer tourists visit the wind-ravaged east coast, but surfers will likely visit. These are Barbados’ top hotels.
Maxwell’s Sea Breeze Beachhouse
As its name implies, this southern coast all-inclusive resort is easygoing. The spacious, barefoot-friendly rooms have balconies overlooking the sea and are decorated with Barbadian art. The six restaurants, including the fine-dining Mahogany, and beach bars for bespoke rum punches and nightly entertainment are popular with all ages. Its laid-back vibe, all-inclusive nature, and beach activities and kids’ club make it popular with families. The proximity to the airport and Oistins, where Barbados’ monthly fish fry is famous, are key benefits.
Christ Church’s O2 Beach Club & Spa
This luxurious hotel in St Lawrence Gap, one of Barbados’ most lively south coast neighborhoods, was reimagined in 2021. Two pools include swim-up bars and sunloungers with huge pink and black cushions. A family-friendly block has wide rooms and huge balconies, while an adult-only block has rooms that open directly to the pool. An Ibiza-style roof deck with nest chairs and a little pool for posing serves tapas and offers stunning coastal views. Sister property Sea Breeze serves food, and Bridgetown and the airport are nearby.
The St James Beach Sandpiper
Family-owned Sandpiper on a magnificent west-coast shoreline provides an intimate, sumptuous vibe. In seven acres of palms, bougainvillaea, and quivering ferns, the low-slung white and walnut wood houses offer a nostalgic charm with thumping ceiling fans and classic Barbadian paintings. There are two pools—a sleek lap pool that’s adults-only in the morning and a family-friendly one—but the main attraction is Harold’s Bar, a fine-dining restaurant and informal bar lighted by fairy lights at night. Sailing, kayaking, and paddleboarding are provided; inquire when to snorkel to observe turtles. Short stroll to Holetown luxury stores.
Ports Barbados, Dover
Sandals, the only all-inclusive adult-only resort in Barbados, is on Dover Beach on the development-heavy south coast. As expected, couples may enjoy swinging love nests, cabanas, suites with butler service, and outdoor hot tubs. Expect 11 worldwide eateries and access to Sandals Royal next door, which ups the luxury factor.
