Buyukada is an area of Istanbul that seems far away, but it’s only a 30-minute ferry ride away. When people come here, though, they hear the sound of birds and horses walking on cobblestones instead of the noise of the city. 

Since cars aren’t allowed and everyone gets around on horseback, the island’s broken-down houses, stone terraces, and louvred shutters make you feel like you’ve gone back in time. From the main square, you can ride through the empty house that was once owned by Buyukada’s most famous resident, Leon Trotsky.

Cappadocia will make you feel like you’re in a different world.

Cappadocia has an otherworldly feel to it. It is on a hill north of Turkey’s Taurus Mountains.

Soft volcanic rock has been shaped into strange spires and cones. Churches and homes have been cut into the sides of the hills around the area.

Lonely Planet calls the geography “fantastical” and notes that the “most famous sights” are the fresco-adorned rock-cut chapels of Goreme Open-Air Museum and the underground refuges of Derinkuyu and Kaymakli. 

Argos in Cappadocia is a noteworthy option for housing. A hideaway near the historic village of Uchisar, it offers beautiful views of hot air balloons floating at daybreak and was built from the remnants of a 2,000-year-old monastery.

Gocek lets you live like a jet-setter.

Gocek emerges from a background of mountains covered in forest, lovely islands, and market towns. 

Gocek, which was formerly ravaged by pirates, subsequently developed into a hub for Ottoman traders. The area now attracts wealthy Turks and jet-setters on superyachts every summer. 

Even though Dalaman Airport is only 20 minutes away, the area is very quiet. The only sounds you can hear are fishers hauling in their catch and the slow clattering of metal on masts.
