Mabul Island, also known as Pulau Mabul in Malaysian. This is a small island that was reclaimed when the fishing village appeared in 1970. It was not until 1990 that it became more popular thanks to many divers coming here to work. The land on the island is about 20 hectares wide, quite flat with a pure white sand beach, and possesses a coral reef of more than 2 square kilometers in the northwest of the island.
Mabul Island is administered as part of Semporna in the Tawau district. There are two main villages on the island: Kampung Mabul and Kampung Musu. Most people on the island live a nomadic lifestyle. Because people make a living by fishing, people always know how to preserve natural resources. That’s why visitors always feel that human activities on the island do not affect the ecosystem too much.
Mabul fishermen like to fish near the Malaysia-Philippines border, perhaps due to abundant fish resources. An average fishing trip will last from 3 to 5 days at sea. When the men returned, their catch was sold in the Semporna area on the mainland. The lives of people on the island continue to pass like that. In 1992, Sipadan Mabul Resort (SMART) bought a portion of land in the east of Mabul and developed it towards tourism.
Thanks to the beautiful coral reef located at a depth of 25-30m, visitors here can enjoy wonderful scuba diving. Most resorts have scuba diving services. In addition to admiring the strange sea creatures, you can also catch some squid, octopus, fish, etc. to experience a day of being a fisherman on Mabul Island.
In total, there are about 6 resorts for scuba diving enthusiasts to stay. Most are located on land, but some areas will be built on stilts along the shore. During your days on Mabul Island, you will have the opportunity to clearly feel the relaxation when blending with the rich, pristine nature here. In particular, with naturally beautiful “virtual living” corners, those who love taking photos will definitely be more fascinated with the wonderful waters of Mabul Island.
