Darwin Nunez was on target yet again as Uruguay earned another historic victory over Argentina during the early hours of Friday morning.
Last month, Nunez helped Marcelo Bielsa’s team defeat Brazil 2-1 thanks to his talismanic performance. For the first time in twenty-one years, Uruguay overcame the five-time World Cup winners thanks to a goal and an assist from him.
La Celeste has now defeated Argentina, the defending World Cup champions. Nunez scored in the 87th minute to secure all three points as they won 2-0 in Buenos Aires. Uruguay moved up to second place in the standings, and Argentina’s perfect start to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers was broken by the victory.

Nunez carried on the scintillating form he’s displayed for Liverpool this season, having scored seven times and registered six assists. Uruguayan newspaper El Pais gave the 24-year-old’s performance an 8/10.
The comment on his performance said: “In the first half he had a very clear chance of scoring when he went one-on-one against Dibu Martínez. His shot was lost close to the hair. In the complement, he had гevenge and did not fail. He made it 2-0. Very committed putting pressure on the last Albiceleste line.”
During the match, Darwin Nunez participated in 15 Duels, 7 Recoveries and made 6 dribble attempts

El Pais reported after the game that Lionel Messi, captain of Argentina, was left angry ‘with the young people’ of his side.
Meanwhile, La Red 21 reported how Nunez was a ‘constant dɑnger’ throughout the encounter to defeat Liverpool team-mate Alexis Mac Allister.
The former Benfica forward missed a good chance in the first half, although ESPN described how he built up ‘power and speed’ to engineer the opportunity. And when he did get another opening in the closing stages, Nunez showed devastating pace to his Argentina on the break before he ‘feints and finishes against [Emi] Martínez to close the game.”
