Bruno Fernandes was denied by Robert Sanchez from the penalty spot
Erik ten Hag’s team also had a strong showing from Alejandro Garnacho as they overcame their loss at Newcastle.
But before McTominay opened the score, captain Bruno Fernandes had a scare from the penalty spot, when Robert Sanchez saved his attempt.
Here is how we rated the United performances…
Andre Onana – 6
Great stop to deny Jackson as he went clean through in the first half will do his confidence the power of good. Well beaten by Palmer for Chelsea goal.
Diogo Dalot – 6
Picked ahead of Wan Bissaka at right back and justified the manager’s decision this time. Did his bit defensively and pinged over a couple of useful crosses.
Harry Maguire – 8
Had a hand in opening goal as his shot was saved. Brilliant interception to stop Jackson racing clear. What a return to favour the England man is having.
Victor Lindelof – 5
Could not get a foot in on Palmer as he equalised for United. The home side looked open to Chelsea breaks in the first half and the Swede did not reappear for the second half.
Luke Shaw – 7
Needless booking for kicking the ball away early on but showed his versatility by moving to centre back second half. United look a much better team with him back in the side after long lay off.
Scott McTominay – 9
Again proved to be United’s matchwinner and should have had the match-ball. Steered home to put United ahead and rose at the back post to nod the second.
Sofyan Amrabat – 8
Lost possession badly early on and it almost proved costly but otherwise an impressive game for the Moroccan. Looks much better in the middle than at left back.
Antony – 6
Won the penalty after foul by Fernandez Poked a deflected shot just wide second half but United fans would still like to see more for the money they spent on him.
Bruno Fernandes – 6
Disappointing penalty was too easy for Sanchez and a couple of other chances too – but the Portuguese never hides and he kept the team ticking.
Alejandro Garnacho – 8
Provided the crosses for both United goals. Tried another of his bicycle kicks but this one was miles off. The fans will forgive him though.
Rasmus Hojlund – 6
Replace to Rashford. Fortunately, there was no interference despite the first goal being offside. His sole noteworthy opportunity was shot over in the first few minutes. standing ovation when he was substituted in the latter stages.

Brought on at the end to shore things up.
