During Besiktas’ Europa Conference League victory over Lugano, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, a former midfielder for Arsenal and Liverpool, was awarded a straight red card for booting an opponent.
The Besiktas player’s contract at Liverpool expired in the summer, allowing him to join the Turkish team on a free transfer. On Thursday, he continued to play with his competitive strike.
In the last moments of the European match, Oxlade-Chamberlain unleashed his inner David Beckham in a moment of craziness that saw him kιck out at Renato Steffen of Lugano.
After a ball-tossing match, Oxlade-Chamberlain was knocked to the ground by Steffen and the Englishman’s continued grappling.
The 30-year-old then unleashed a vicious tirade, landing one boot on top of Steffen’s left leg and then kicking him in the inner thigh.
After rugby-tackled Steffen to the ground, he wrapped both of his arms around his legs and they started to stɾuɡɡlе.
Beckham’s notorious red card against Argentina in 1998 for a similar charge on Diego Simeone sparked immediate similarities to the incident.
Simeone fell theatrically to the ground as Beckham kicked out while facedown in the turf. As a result, the former England and Manchester United winger was sent off.
Beckham later called it “the most difficult time in his career” and was used as the poster boy for England’s World Cup elimination.
Following Oxlade-Chamberlain’s dismissal, players and coaching staff got into a massive brawl on the field at Letzigrund stadium.
