In an attempt to take the lead in the standings and exert pressure on Girona, who face Deportivo Alaves at home tomorrow, Real Madrid hosted Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu.
With David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger in the back and Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo leading the way, Carlo Ancelotti opened with his finest lineup.
Bellingham scored the first goal twenty-five minutes in thanks to a stunning header from Luka Modric. But ten minutes later, David Alaba had to be substituted for Nacho after collapsing, holding his knee.
Fran Garcia took Ferland Mendy’s place at halftime after the latter sustained an injury during this half.
According to Jose Luis Sanchez’s reports from Madrid, Alaba appears to have suffered a major injury and may be sidelined for an extended period of time. It appears that he has damaged his internal lateral ligament. He’ll be tested either tomorrow morning or tonight.
In the meantime, Mendy has tests tomorrow. It was encouraging that the player was able to finish the first half without much issues.
Alaba’s injury is a major setback for Madrid, who are in a close title battle with Girona this season, especially as Eder Militao is still out until the conclusion of the campaign. Given Fran Garcia’s recent form—he has already contributed four assists in La Liga—Mendy’s injury shouldn’t be a major setback.
