After Liverpool vs. United, Roy Keane said that Virgil van Dijk, the captain of Liverpool, was “arrogant.” However, van Dijk has denied Keane’s charges.
Liverpool and United drew 0-0 tightly on Sunday night at Anfield, with Liverpool having the upper hand in terms of chances created, possession of the ball, and shots on goal.
Nevertheless, United’s strong performance earned them a point, and in the post-match interview following the game, Van Dijk expressed his dissatisfaction.
“There was only one team, I think, that was trying to win the game. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen,” said the Dutchman.
“That’s why it’s frustrating. We want to win every game, of course, but especially if we play against a team like them…
“We were superior in all aspects from the very beginning. They were hoping for a couple of counterattacks and to hurt us on the break. In the end, they are buzzing with a point, and we are very disappointed with a point.”
Shortly after, Keane retaliated in the Sky Sports studio, calling the Liverpool defender’s remarks “arrogant” and advising him to be more selective with his words.
“He needs to be reminded of himself; he’s playing for a club that’s won one title in 30 years,” Keane said.
“He said only one team wanted to win; Manchester United were buzzing with the point. Man United is in a difficult place, like Liverpool has been in a difficult place for many a year. So maybe that bit of arrogance backfired on him today.”
Van Dijk has responded to Keane’s backlash, disputing the idea that his remarks were “arrogant” and claiming that they were true.
“I like Roy Keane; if he said that, then it’s fine,” he said.
“He is Manchester United through and through, and I understand he could react like that, but I felt what I said, and there is absolutely no arrogance in that.
“Everyone who watched the game probably felt the same. We move on. We had the opportunity, but we couldn’t score, and that’s the frustrating part.”
Liverpool faces Arsenal, and United plays West Ham after that.
