Thirty-eight minutes into Wednesday’s EFL Cup quarterfinal match at Anfield, Dominik Szoboszlai scored the fourth goal of his Liverpool career with a rocket into the net against West Ham.
After gathering the ball thirty yards from goal, the Hungary international set himself up and unleashed a breathtaking low shot that twisted in the air and went past Hammers custodian Alphonse Areola.
Similar long-range goals were scored by Szoboszlai during Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Leicester City in the third round.
During his Sky Sports commentary on Wednesday’s match, former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher made the comparison between Szoboszlai’s skill and that of Cristiano Ronaldo.
“We’ve seen it once before in this competition at the Kop end against Leicester,” Carragher stated. “It happened against West Ham once more.
Carragher continued, “Ben Johnson on that far side, he just seems to stand off,” after seeing a replay. Perhaps he is unaware of Szoboszlai’s abilities and skills.
He simply locates that distant spot. Take a look at that. It simply gets past the goaltender. We see that movement, the way he strikes the ball, almost like Cristiano Ronaldo.”
After that, Liverpool crushed West Ham 5-1.
At Anfield, Curtis Jones scored twice. Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo discovered the net as well. The Hammers’ consolation goal came from Jarrod Bowen.
Fulham and Liverpool will now play in the semifinals. On February 25, the victor of the best-of-two matchup will play either Middlesbrough or Chelsea in the championship match.
