Dominik Szoboszlai scored a rocket from 30 yards in the first half
Szoboszlai scored his third goal of the season in all competitions for Liverpool on Wednesday
Cristiano Ronaldo has made a habit throughout his career of scoring long-range goals
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher described Szoboszlai’s strike as ‘Cristiano Ronaldo-esque’
Commentating on the goal for Sky Sports, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher hailed the strike as ‘Almost Cristiano Ronaldo-esque the way he hits the ball’.
Liverpool started on the front foot and dominated the early possession with Harvey Elliott looking particularly dangerous in the opening 20 minutes with a series of chances.
Szoboszlai then fired the hosts with a fine finish ahead just before the half-hour mark, smashing the ball into Alphonse Areola’s bottom corner from 30 yards.
Szoboszlai’s goal came at a crucial time for the Hungarian who has recently suffered a dip in form since his stunning start to life in the north-west.
The 23-year-old received the ball from Jarell Quansah roughly 30-yards out from goal and smashed a shot goalbound that soared into the net.
Hammers goalkeeper Alphonse Areola dived to try and stop the effort but was left helplessly stretching as Szoboszlai ran off celebrating with his Liverpool team-mates.
Carragher further beamed as he watched his former side take a deserved lead in their knockout fixture against David Moyes’ side.
‘Liverpool deserved that. We’ve seen it once before in this competition at the Kop end against Leicester and we’ve seen it now against West Ham.
‘West Ham have been poor in this first half and this sums them up. A great chance to counter-attack and hurt Liverpool.
‘Ben Johnson stands off maybe he’s not aware of Szoboszlai or the strengths he’s got.’
Comparisons to Ronaldo come in the wake of the legendary former Real Madrid, Juventus and Man United star making a habit of scoring long-range goals throughout his career.
