”How can you say that’s not a penalty?” yelled Jurgen Klopp in response to Martin Odegaard of Arsenal getting away with a handball.
On Saturday night at Anfield, the Premier League title contenders tied 1-1 in an exciting match.
However, Liverpool manager Klopp was perplexed as to why his team was unable to secure all three points.
After just four minutes, defender Gabriel Magalhaes’ powerful header gave Arsenal the lead.
Referee Chris Kavanagh turned away Liverpool’s golden penalty claim at that point.
The deflected free-kick from Trent Alexander-Arnold spun in Martin Odegaard’s direction, the Gunners’ captain.
And as Odegaard faltered a little, it was evident that the ball contacted his hand before bouncing off of him and away from Mo Salah of Liverpool.
As Odegaard meekly continued to play, the Reds’ stars and the entire Anfield crowd cried out for a penalty.
After Kavanagh continued to play, a thorough VAR review determined that it was not evident.
After Salah’s stunning first-half equaliser to tie the score, Klopp commented, “The penalty situation is a weird situation.”
“I don’t know if the ref can see it, but you look at it and I’m not sure how you can say it’s not a penalty.”
“From a Liverpool perspective, that’s always going to be a handball,” Trent Alexander-Arnold continued. For whatever reason, the choice didn’t work out in our favour.
That most likely gave us a second goal and allowed us to get back into the game.
“We see it as a penalty but the decision didn’t go out way.”
Commentator Gary Neville referred to Odegaard as “lucky” and said that his saving slip was what kept him alive.
However, Sky Sports watchers were perplexed.
