THRONE IS BACK: Liverpool takes top spot from Arsenal with two ‘delicate’ goals from Nunez and Jota to beat Burnley

Winning 2-0 at Burnley Stadium in round 19, Liverpool temporarily took over the top of the Premier League table from Arsenal.

Under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool won all the Premier League on Boxing Day. This winning streak was extended to 6, when Klopp and his players defeated Burnley thanks to two goals at the beginning and end of the match.

Darwin Nunez ended more than 600 minutes of failure at the club, and Diogo Jota sealed a 2-0 victory in the final official minute. Liverpool rose to the top of the table with 42 points, two points more than Arsenal – the team will meet West Ham in the latest match of the round.

Liverpool shot 14 times in the first half, including eight times on goal. Klopp’s plays comfortably bombarded Burnley’s goal partly because the home team kicked doubles – a familiar style of play under coach Vincent Kompany. 10 years ago, the former Man City player scored in Liverpool’s last defeat on Boxing Day, but this time he could not have more good memories against his opponent.

The Uruguay striker’s first goal after 13 matches in all competitions, and also the first goal outside the penalty area for Liverpool.

The gap could have been safer for Liverpool if the crossbar had not rejected Salah’s volley and the referee had not canceled Gakpo’s goal because of Nunez’s error. Goalkeeper James Trafford also played great, making seven saves in the first half, notably pushing the ball with his fingertips from Salah’s one-touch shot.

The second half saw Burnley rise, while Liverpool played lurking. The away team had another goal canceled out, in a situation where coach Klopp said that only people who don’t know how to play football would catch an offside error. Harvey Elliott exchanged blows with Ryan Gravenberch and then shot a one-touch shot into the near corner of Burnley’s net, but VAR determined Salah was offside and blocked the Trafford goalkeeper’s view.

Having escaped defeat, Burnley was excited and continued to advance. The home team’s clearest opportunity came in the 68th minute, when Wilson Odobert skillfully dribbled the ball and then crossed for Johann Berg Gudmundsson to head over the bar from close range.

When Burnley’s defense was tired, coach Klopp sent the remaining attackers Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota onto the field. The duo coordinated together at a tight angle in the 90th minute, bringing home the goal that sealed a 2-0 victory for Liverpool.
