‘Embarrassing’ – Legend Alan Shearer and Ian Wright slam Diogo Jota after Liverpool star went flying to the ground and wins penalty vs Newcastle

DIOGO JOTA was slammed as “embarrassing” by Alan Shearer after he won a penalty for Liverpool against Newcastle.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds moved three points clear of Aston Villa as they beat the Magpies 4-2 at Anfield last night.

Liverpool controlled the Premier League match for the whole duration, but when Sven Botman gave Toon a late goal on 81 minutes to make it 3-2, it appeared as though a frantic finish was in store.

But after the Merseyside team was given a penalty, Mo Salah scored his second goal of the match from the spot a few moments later to seal the triumph.

That came when Jota was played clean through and the star rounded goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

But just as the 27-year-old Portuguese forward looked set to slot home into an empty net, he went flying to the ground following minimal contact from Dubravka.

Afterwards, Arsenal legend Ian Wright took to social media to question Jota, writing: “Would rather go down for a penalty than put the ball in an empty net! Seen it all.”

And that led to a response from his fellow Match of the Day pundit and Newcastle’s all-time top scorer Shearer.

He labelled Jota as “embarrassing” in his reply.

Meanwhile, even Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher admitted that he “couldn’t fathom” why a forward would go down when presented with an empty net to score.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, he said: “He doesn’t need to go down. Just carry on.

“There’s the slightest touch but it doesn’t knock him off. It’s there just to be put in with your left foot.

“He’s gone down far too easily. Is there contact? I don’t think there’s much contact really.

“Maybe the slightest contact but I don’t believe a player would go down when there’s an empty net to put the ball in it.

“I can’t fathom that.”
