The 2023 athlete of the year is Mária Érdi, a world-champion sailor, while the 2023 athlete of the year for women is Dominik Szoboszlai, a football player for Liverpool and captain of the Hungarian national team. These selections were made by the Hungarian Sports Journalists’ Association (MSÚSZ).
The results of the 66th voting were announced at the Athlete of the Year gala held in the Opera House on Monday night.
In traditional team sports, the men’s football team won the year’s best, just like the year before, while the men’s sword team won individual sports team competitions. Building on his win from the previous year, Marco Rossi, the captain of the national football team, received the most votes among the coaches.
Accepting the MSÚSZ Lifetime Achievement Award was Pál Schmitt, a two-time Olympic champion duelist, Athlete of the Nation, former president of the Republic, honorary president of the Hungarian Olympic Committee, and former member of the International Olympic Committee.
