SALAH’S NIGHTMARE: Mohamed Salah close to tears after being forced off with a hamstring injury in Egypt’s draw with Ghana at AFCON

Mo Salah, Liverpool’s leading scorer, was pulled off during Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations match against Ghana due to what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

With his club only two points ahead of Manchester City and Aston Villa at the top of the Premier League table, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp must now fervently hope the injury is not catastrophic. The 31-year-old battled back tears when he was substituted just before halftime.

After exploding into a run, Salah gripped the back of his left leg and lay on his back seeking treatment.

As the most well-known player in the tournament was substituted, Ghana fans applauded as he hobbled to the touchline.

He watched as his team, which had twice fallen down to goals from West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus, rallied for a 2-2 draw in the second half alongside the Egypt substitutes.

Salah’s absence was already anticipated by Liverpool up until their match against Brentford on February 17, provided Egypt advanced to the AFCON final in Abidjan.

However, the worry now is that he may miss a much longer period of time healing from his injuries.

Numerous players are already out of the Reds lineup. Injuries have been reported for Ben Doak, Andrew Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Thiago Alcantara, Kostas Tsimikas, Joel Matip, and Dominik Szoboszlai. Japan is represented at the Asian Cup by Wataru Endo.

Salah’s stoppage-time penalty was necessary for Egypt to salvage a point against Mozambique in their AFCON opening group match.

On Sunday, Liverpool will play Bournemouth in the Premier League again before playing Fulham in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semifinal.

The news that their finest player was injured ahead of a demanding schedule of four games alarmed Reds supporters.

“We’re in trouble if this Salah injury is serious,” one fan commented on X, the defunct Twitter platform.  Another said, ‘Salah hamstring, the season is done.’

Another said: “Salah hurt.” It is unbelievable how unlucky we are.

Following the match, Egypt’s coach Rui Vitoria stated he had no updated information regarding the severity of Salah’s injury; the winger will undergo more testing.

“We don’t know what the problem is yet,” he stated. I’m hoping it won’t be a major issue.

We could only make two substitutes in the second half, so it was a challenging situation for us. Though I’m not sure, I’ll give it a try.

Egypt is second in Group A after a draw in their initial match. They play Mozambique on Friday, the team leading the group, Cape Verde.
