Man United midfielder Sofyan Amrabat was ‘sent off twice’ during Morroco’s shock AFCON loss to South Africa.
Morroco were one of the pre-tournament favourites, given their historic run at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
Struggling Man United star Sofyan Amrabat thought he had escaped a sending off
But the former Fiorentina star was given a straight red card following a VAR check
However, South Arica’s Evidence Makgopa scored a brilliant opening goal in the 57th minute of the game
With six minutes to go, the Atlas Lions had the chance to equalise through Achraf Hakimi, but the PSG man’s penalty hit the crossbar. As Morocco pushed for an equaliser, they were caught on the counter in stoppage time, and Amrabat produced a professional foul to receive his marching orders.
Teboho Mokoena ensured the win for South Africa with a 95th minute curling free-kick.
Now that Morocco has crashed out of AFCON, the Reds no longer have any representatives in the tournament after Andre Onana’s Cameroon were eliminated by Nigeria at the weekend.
However, for former Fiorentina midfielder Amrabat, the night went from bad to worse after he was sent off for a second time.
Following a reckless challenge he made as the last defender for Morroco, the referee was quick to award a second yellow and red card to the player.
But, after a VAR check gave Amrabat some hope and his team belief they could steal an equaliser, the second yellow was upgraded to a straight red much to the dissapointment of the struggling Old Trafford star.
On Sunday, Erik ten Hag confirmed Onana will be back and available for selection again on Thursday night when the Reds travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers. But for Amrabat, this game in the West Midlands will likely come too soon.
It is expected the Fiorentina midfielder will return to Manchester on Wednesday, which is likely to be too short notice to feature at Molineux a day later. However, Sunday’s home clash with West Ham United could fall in good time for Amrabat to make a return to the squad
