Liverpool had so many outstanding individual performances yesterday night. Conor Bradley will deservedly receive the majority of the praise. His performance was extraordinary and has the potential to be the starting point for his budding career.
But Bradley wasn’t the only one who gave a fantastic performance. Darwin Nunez was truly unfortunate not to score because he had such a menacing appearance the entire evening. At the very end, though, he did receive an assist. And there was Alexis Mac Allister, who was just amazing.
Mac Allister was in complete charge of Chelsea’s enormously expensive midfield, controlling the middle of the park. The Argentine won the most duels (11) and tackles (7) on the field.
One may have excused Moises Caicedo for asking what on earth was going on.
The Chelsea midfielder appeared to be surrounded by a sea of red, Liverpool players snapping at his heels every time he got possession.
The home team’s relentless dominance in the first half threatened to completely destroy the Londoners, and Caicedo was not the only one to be bullied into submission.
However, the Ecuadorian was the one who, along with Romeo Lavia’s injury, turned down Liverpool’s offer to go last summer in favor of Stamford Bridge.
Even though it seemed like a clear subplot for this match, it was especially fitting considering what happened—Jurgen Klopp’s team taking the early midfield initiative and holding onto it like a vice. Enzo Fernandez of Chelsea once merely spread his arms wide in confusion at his teammates at a period in the second half.
Caicedo had long ago left, limping off disheartened with the jeers from Anfield echoing in his ears, by the time referee Paul Tierney ended the visitors’ suffering with the final whistle on a 4-1 beating.
Liverpool, on the other hand, has gotten past that setback and is again challenging on four fronts thanks in large part to their reorganized engine room. This season, Liverpool is five points clear at the top of the Premier League.
In this instance, the player who chose to support Liverpool over Chelsea outperformed his former Brighton teammate in the midfield duel.
In light of recent performances, there is less disagreement about Alexis Mac Allister’s potential as a number six—another addition to his expanding resume. His positioning and comprehension of the role have grown with more games played, and some of his signature passing has left the Anfield audience wailing with delight.
Mac Allister was pictured in agony on the Anfield field after he clashed with Chelsea replacement Cesare Casadei during the game’s dying moments. Having made all five substitutions, Klopp was unable to bring in Mac Allister despite the injury. With courage, the Argentine midfielder kept playing to help the team win.
Wataru Endo’s leave of absence for foreign service was extended earlier in the day, thus Mac Allister’s performance has been essential to sustaining the impetus the Japanese have brought.
Therefore, it should come as no surprise that Klopp was holding his head high when Mac Allister struck the ground in pain during the last moments of the game following a collision with Chelsea substitute Cesare Casadei.
Liverpool will be crossing their fingers that the Argentine is well in time for Sunday’s trip to Arsenal. Based on this data, he will play a significant role at a critical point in the race for the crown.
