UNLOCK: Mac Allister created a ‘historic’ milestone in his career with 2 assist after Wataru Endo returned at No.6 position in Liverpool’s victory over Luton

Alexis Mac Allister was the outstanding player on what was a great night for Liverpool on Wednesday.

The encounter with Luton Town appeared to be a challenging evening at Anfield. Liverpool supporters, who were already suffering from several injuries, were alarmed when Chiedozie Ogbene gave the Hatters an early lead.

Anxiety filled the stadium as Jurgen Klopp argued with the spectators. The Reds’ title challenge seemed to be vanishing right in front of our eyes. However, Liverpool recovered at halftime and made a comeback. After the game, Luton manager Rob Edwards remarked on how “amazing” the atmosphere was at the stadium, which undoubtedly helped the squad progress.

It wasn’t all the supporters though, the players still had to do their bit. And no one did it quite like Mac Allister. Even before his whipped corner set up Virgil van Dijk’s equaliser, the 25-year-old was Liverpool’s best player.

Shortly after he’d planted that perfect ball on Van Dijk’s head, Mac Allister was at it again. The Argentine’s ferocious volleyed cross was just begging to be put in by Cody Gakpo. The Dutchman duly obliged.

Two assists then for Macca, and according to Squawka after the game, that was the first time the No.10 had set up two goals in the same match in 119 Premier League appearances.

To the untrained eye, Mac Allister might have been something of an underwhelming addition for Liverpool so far.

For those looking out for goal contributions for midfielders, the World Cup winner will not have featured on their radar.

But for anyone who’s been watching the Reds closely this season, they’ll be in no doubt about Mac Allister’s importance to this team. Playing as a No.6 for much of the campaign, he has now been unleashed in his more favoured position. And how.

In the three matches since Wataru Endo returned to his defensive midfield role, Mac Allister has one goal and now two assists. He’s been electric.

Having perhaps taken a second to adjust to his new team, the Argentina international is now one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Signed as a more offensive midfield player, Mac Allister should perhaps be involved in the final third a little more than he is.

But that yesterday signalled his first two-assist game shows you that there’s much more to him besides. He has never been purely just a creative player.

So neat and tidy with the ball, Fotmob have Mac Allister down as creating four further chances for Liverpool last night. He made five passes into the final third and completed two out of two dribbles.

Then there’s the other side to his game. Not positionally a 6 last night, but still combative, Macca made two interceptions and three recoveries. In short, he did his bit all over the pitch. So, it might have been the first in this metric last night, but we don’t think it’ll be the last. What a player.
