The first ten minutes of the match were dominated by City in an electrifying atmosphere at Anfield.
Liverpool took the lead as Caoimhin Kelleher made a quick stop to deny Julian Alvarez and then palmed away a strong effort from Kevin De Bruyne.
Bradley was found by Van Dijk’s characteristic move, and the right-back blasted in a low cross that Darwin Nunez was just barely able to reach at the back post.
After Nunez, who had strayed offside, squared for Luis Diaz to put the final touch, the Reds saw a goal disallowed. However, just as the momentum was beginning to shift in favour of City, Stones scored by stealing in at the near post to convert De Bruyne’s corner.
After swiftly getting over their setback, Klopp’s team looked for a way to get back into the game.
After a calm and inquisitive sequence of passing, Szoboszlai misplayed his header after being reached by an excellent cross from Harvey Elliott. Erling Haaland’s counterattack attempt was saved by Kelleher, and Diaz missed the target after a turnover.
Before an exhilarating first half came to an end, Kyle Walker and Bradley still had time to spurn presentable opportunities to set up goals.
After the break, there was to be no lull in the action or tension, as Liverpool was given a penalty two minutes into the second half.
Because of his quickness, Nunez was able to intercept Nathan Ake’s backpass before Ederson could, and the City custodian clattered into the No. 9 as a result.
After a long wait for Ederson, who eventually went off hurt, to receive treatment, Mac Allister stepped up to bury his spot-kick into the top corner, his composure unwavering.
Despite a Phil Foden opportunity that Kelleher stopped for City, the Reds were now experiencing their first period of consistent domination while being cheered on by a boisterous home crowd.
Following a one-two with Nunez and a wasted attempt by Szoboszlai, Diaz’s initial touch escaped him, allowing substitute goalkeeper Stefan Ortega to gather. Klopp then brought on Salah and Andy Robertson from the bench.
When Salah threaded a through ball for Diaz to put through on goal, the Colombian missed a spectacular opportunity to set up a score. This was Salah’s first noteworthy participation.
Then, Ortega mishandled a low curler from Mac Allister and smothered when Nunez connected with Robertson’s throw. At the other end, Kelleher pushed Ake’s cross off Foden, rattling the crossbar.
When Jeremy Doku, a replacement for City, struck the inside of the post in the 89th minute, the visitors were dangerously close to winning all three points. However, Liverpool rallied for a final push in stoppage time.
More drama followed as two penalty requests from the Reds were dismissed when Mac Allister and Salah fell down in the area, and Elliott saw a goal disallowed after Salah had strayed offside before crossing to Cody Gakpo.
