On Thursday night, the Reds defeated Sparta Prague 4–0 in the opening 13 minutes thanks to a goal from Mohamed Salah that surpassed the club record.
Despite the fact that the club prevailed 5-1 in the first leg of the Europa League Last-16 in Czechia, Jurgen Klopp fielded a potent lineup at Anfield to maintain momentum ahead of a crucial domestic run.
Within seven minutes of one another, goals from Darwin Nunez, Bobby Clark, Mohamed Salah, and Cody Gakpo gave the Reds a 4-0 lead for the game and a 9-1 lead overall.
After suffering an injury while playing for Egypt in the African Cup of Nations, Salah made a comeback to the Liverpool starting lineup. His goal was especially meaningful because of what it means for his Anfield legacy.
The Egyptian became the first player in seven straight seasons to score 20 goals or more for Liverpool in all competitions.
Since joining the team in 2017, the 31-year-old has become a Merseyside icon. No other Liverpool legend has been able to score at least 20 goals in a season, and he has done so in each one of his three seasons with the team.
In addition, he holds three Premier League Golden Boot trophies—two of which were shared—and the record for most goals scored by an African player in UEFA club tournaments.
Prior to Clark scoring his first goal for Liverpool by connecting with Salah’s ball, Nunez backed up his first leg brace by opening the scoring at Anfield with a crisp finish into the bottom corner.
After ten minutes, the Egyptian sprinted onto the loose ball and curled home a stunning drive across the goal; four minutes later, Salah assisted Gakpo for the fourth.
Liverpool defeated the opposition 6-1 on the night and 11-2 overall to go to the quarterfinals, where a draw will take place on Friday.
The final match before the international break will see Liverpool, who are now ranked second in the English premier league, play Manchester United in the FA Cup quarterfinal on Sunday.
