Despite playing at right wing-back for Bayer Leverkusen, Jeremie Frimpong—a target for Manchester United last summer—has been involved in more goals this season than Bruno Fernandes. As Xabi Alonso’s team has amassed a 10-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga table without dropping a single match, Frimpong has been a pillar of the team.
With 10 goals and 11 assists in all competitions, the 23-year-old Frimpong has undoubtedly contributed to Leverkusen’s amazing season. Though playing in a much more advanced position, Fernandes, his United teammate, is put to shame by his incredible effect at wing-back.
The Red Devils, who could use a player like Frimpong to boost their goal total, might use the Portuguese midfielder’s nine goals and eight assists as his contribution. They missed out on signing him before the season began, though, as he signed a new long-term contract with Leverkusen in October.
Bild reported in May that United was in ‘advanced talks’ with a view to signing Frimpong, with a deal considered ‘probable’ at that time. According to reports, Erik ten Hag was keen to bring in a new right-back for Old Trafford before the summer transfer window closed, but the Red Devils were unable to do so.
Frimpong’s new contract has a clause that allows him to leave Leverkusen for a relatively little cost, so there’s still a potential he leaves in the summer. According to Fabrizio Romano, interested teams will have a few months to convince him to go for that amount since his £34.2 million release clause won’t go into effect until the beginning of the following season.
Frimpong has also been linked to Bayern Munich and Liverpool, so if United decides to pursue a summer transfer, they will probably face fierce competition. In an interview with Ziggo Sport last month, the player himself made a suggestion that he might be interested in joining Liverpool: “Great club with history, that would be great.” Who can predict what the future holds?”
After going through the Manchester City academy as a young player, Frimpong made hints in another interview with Marca about his desire to rejoin the team. “I don’t know, but it would be great,” he remarked. They are the greatest team in the world and they just won the Champions League. We’ll find out later.”
For a while now, United has been in dire need of a new right-back, and Frimpong appears to be the ideal choice to start at Old Trafford in the upcoming campaign. Though several other elite teams are rumoured to be in the running ahead of the summer, it is unclear if the Red Devils would look back and regret not signing him a year ago.
