Prior to his lightning-fast sprints, Luis Diaz was little recognized. Though it reads like a fairy tale, this is the true story of a native child born in the most isolated region of Colombia in a mud home.

The Wayuu are an old tribe that has long flourished in the arid, severe climate of Colombia’s La Guajira peninsula. They have successfully retreated into a secluded hamlet, where they refer to themselves as “children of the sun, sand, and wind,” after overcoming the white man. Their prehistoric civilization, which still includes matriarchal clans, has been preserved there.

This made Luis Diaz, a Wayuu youngster, struggle on his first trip outside of La Guajira. Arriving at a training camp in Bogota, the capital, without any winter clothing, Diaz was excited about a soccer match involving indigenous tribes from all around South America in Chile. Diaz also practices constantly. He developed into a powerful, young man who was clearly highly skilled at what he did.

Diaz’s previous partner, Sebastian Viera, is still impressed. His brilliant personal style and lightning-fast ball handling make it difficult to predict what play he will make next. Still, Diaz always maintains her home spotless. Whether the team is winning or losing, at home or away, he always plays with the same zeal and commitment.

Usually, he radiates joy and hope. Coach Percy Moncada of Barranquilla stated, “That hasn’t changed from the time I was a kid until now, in every game, in every shirt.” Another teacher, Roberto Penaloza, likened Diaz’s cool demeanor and keen intellect to those of a grandmaster of chess. Penaloza’s daughter would frequently tell her father that he needed to snap a lot of photos of Diaz since he was going to be famous.
