When two Manchester United first-team players recently joined their session, young people at a Manchester United Foundation football project in Stockport received the surprise of their lives.
While attending their regular Friday night session at Werneth School, participants in the Street Reds program were surprised to see Reds stars Scott McTominay and Angel Gomes.
Before posing for pictures and signing autographs, the players engaged the kids in a variety of drills and games.
“It’s amazing to be here,” said McTominay, a midfielder for United. “I can remember being a young kid and wanting to play football all the time.” It’s wonderful to watch them so content as they play football, especially the younger ones, as evidenced by the smiles on their faces.
“You don’t realize how far the work goes; it’s amazing for the children and something they’ll remember for a long time,” Scott said in reference to the significance of Manchester United Foundation’s involvement in the neighborhood.
“It’s massive to have a session like this for young kids; it keeps them occupied, it’s fun, and it’s important to exercise as well,” remarked teammate Angel Gomes. Giving back to the community is crucial for a team like Manchester United.
Shea, a 12-year-old participant in Street Reds, said: “It was really strange seeing Scott and Angel since I’ve seen them on TV, but to see them in person is crazy!
I’ve been attending Street Reds from the very first meeting; it’s fantastic because you get to meet a lot of new people and avoid playing on the streets. I’m now much more confident and skilled at football, which has improved me both psychologically and physically.”
Street Reds is a 48-week program that takes place at 11 locations throughout Greater Manchester. It is modeled after Premier League Kicks and is partially supported by the PL Charitable Fund. With funding from Stockport Youth Offending Service as well, the Werneth facility harnesses the power of football to provide young people (8–18) with an opportunity to follow their passion for coaching, leading, and playing the sport.
“Street Reds is an engagement opportunity for young people to take part in an evening activity, in a safe environment that’s also fun,” stated Philippa Harrison, the Foundation’s manager of community engagement.
It was great to watch the attendees’ reactions when the players arrived; their joy was contagious. The Manchester United players are so kind to these children, spending time with them and providing them with an unforgettable experience.
