On Saturday night, Manchester United lost more ground in their quest to qualify for the Champions League. Despite blowing a lead in the 96th minute, the Red Devils were lucky to draw with Brentford. Express Sport highlights five United players who fell short of expectations in particular, as Erik ten Hag was under further pressure following the uninspiring 1-1 stalemate.
Scott McTominay
With a few huge goals this season, Scott McTominay has kept Ten Hag’s skin intact, but he shouldn’t be playing while Mason Mount is healthy and on the bench.
The Scotsman completed just 23 of his 33 passes, or 70% of the possession, which added to United’s recklessness with the ball.
Brentford outfought the visitors, and he only prevailed in one of his four ground duels and four of his nine air clashes.
Marcus Rashford
Despite his best efforts, Marcus Rashford was unable to stay out of danger or impede his progress with careless touches.
The 26-year-old’s body language and effort off the ball, though, raised the biggest red flags about his play. He gave off the impression of a player unwilling to put in the effort for his club.
Rashford can defend himself in all the interviews he wants, but if he wants to be a part of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s rebuilding, those strong remarks need to show up in his performances.
Hojlund Rasmus
In the FA Cup quarterfinal victory over Liverpool, Rasmus Hojlund did not appear to be fast, and the same could not be said for Brentford.
Even though the 21-year-old attacker didn’t get much playing time, he didn’t produce much when he did have the ball. He is no longer able to score in six straight Premier League games.
However, he is not above reproach. It’s not acceptable to be a striker and win two of your sixteen duels on a football field while losing possession thirteen times and drawing four fouls.
Lisandro Martinez
Similar to Hojlund, Lisandro Martinez wasn’t entirely prepared for the game when he was compelled to enter the field in the 69th minute to substitute for the injured Victor Lindelof.
Although the Argentine’s return to play after an additional eight weeks was encouraging, Willy Kambwala might have been a better option to start off the bench.
Given that Lindelof and Raphael Varane left at halftime and there are now persistent injury concerns, Ten Hag will naturally be desperate to bring Martinez back to his best.
Casemiro
This summer, United needs to make the most of Casemiro. He is no longer able to deliver the kind of performances worthy of his name.
The 32-year-old gave up a dangerous free-kick with a poorly timed slide challenge, then hoofed the ball back to Brentford just minutes after entering the game in the 80th minute.
Ten Hag needs to embrace the rumored interest from Saudi Arabia and trade Casemiro in for a more youthful, defensive-minded midfield player.
