Midfielder Scott McTominay will be benched by Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag for the midweek Premier League match at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea.

Last night, the Red Devils traveled to Brentford and played to a 1-1 draw. They were utterly outmatched, thus ultimately, a point was probably advantageous.

Ten Hag will be looking for a big showing on Thursday when the Blues visit. The Dutchman will need to consider a midfield substitution ahead of the encounter because McTominay is sidelined.

The Scotland international has scored goals for United this season and contributed significantly to their 12 additional Premier League points total.

Nevertheless, when he has been in the starting lineup, his overall results have been underwhelming.

Another good example was yesterday. In the middle of the park, McTominay and Kobbie Mainoo were positioned alongside each other, as Casemiro was not considered well enough to start.

Ten Hag decided to bench Casemiro, who had only recently fully recovered from a slight knee injury, and instead start McTominay and Mainoo in midfield.

The choice turned out to be unwise. For ninety minutes, the Scot had no control whatsoever. Just 23 passes were completed by him, and only 38% of his duels were won (5/13).

Additionally, the 27-year-old misplaced possession 14 times. Mainoo was left to manage the burden alone, and he had very little impact in the center of the midfield.

The Red Devils cannot afford the same against the formidable Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo midfield tandem in the middle of the week. Casemiro has to take the place of McTominay.

Due to injuries, Casemiro has not been at his best this season; yet, before to his most recent setback, the Brazil international had a strong relationship with Mainoo.

We hope to see the two together again on Thursday. Mason Mount might be limited to a bench duty, but he may have a case to make against his previous employers.

Mount just made a comeback following a four-month absence due to a calf injury. Ten Hag might take special care with him.

McTominay, who Transfermarkt now values at €32 million, might perhaps contribute off the bench if the Red Devils fall down early in the match.

The Scot scored both goals in the team’s earlier 2-1 victory over the Blues this season, and with the opportunities that were presented to him, he easily could have scored a hat-trick.
