Update on the status of 3 Man Utd stars after Brentford clash: Varane was precautionary; Garnacho had a heavy trip

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag insisted Alejandro Garnacho was “okay” despite his early substitution in the Premier League draw with Brentford.

Garnacho was replaced by Antony in the 59th minute at the Community Stadium, headed straight down the tunnel and did not re-emerge for the remainder of the match.

The 19-year-old started in Argentina’s friendly victory over Argentina in Los Angeles on Tuesday night and flew back in time for United’s training session at Carrington on Thursday.

“He is okay,” Ten Hag assured.

“Of course, he had a heavy trip but he is okay.”

Ten Hag added that Raphael Varane’s removal during the break was a precaution. Harry Maguire moved ahead of Varane. After overcoming damage to his medial collateral ligament, Lisandro Martinez made his first appearance in eight weeks as a center defender, replacing fellow center back Victor Lindelof in the 69th minute.

Lindelof will be assessed on Sunday ahead of United’s next Premier League fixture away to Chelsea on Thursday.

“I can’t tell,” Ten Hag said when asked about the extent of the injuries.

“We took Rapha off as a precaution at half-time and Victor we have to assess tomorrow.”

United are now 11 points adrift of fourth-placed Aston Villa, who occupy the final guaranteed Champions League qualifying place in the Premier League table.

Tottenham are fifth, which could secure qualification for the tournament if England finish in the top two of the Uefa seasonal coefficients. Spurs are eight points clear of United, who have nine games remaining.

“Still many games to go but, of course, the points will be more expensive by the end,” Ten Hag admitted. “There should have been three, but now it’s only one.

“By the end, we will know how it can work out. But it can be a big point at the end.”
