Rashford’s pressing left plenty to be desired with United fans
A video that has surfaced on social media following the Red Devils’ drаmаtic collapse at Stamford Bridge has only added fuel to the fire of the growing tension between Rashford and the United supporters.
Erik ten Hag’s decision to bench the 26-year-old, despite him scoring in three of his last four games, raised a few eyebrows. Antony took Rashford’s place in the starting line-up and put on one of his best performances this season, even after conceding an early penalty.
Rashford was brought on for Rasmus Hojlund in the 66th minute, just before Antony’s first Premier League assist of the season led to Alejandro Garnacho’s goal, putting the visitors ahead 3-2.
United fought hard to maintain their defensive shape and limit Chelsea’s chances, holding onto their lead until the 100th minute when Palmer’s second penalty secured a comeback win for Chelsea.
But Rashford’s work rate, which has been a point of contention throughout a disappointing season where he’s scored just eight goals in all competitions – a stark contrast to his career-best tally of 30 in 2022/23 – became another talking point.
Once again, United fans were not pleased with his lack of pressing from the front as the team battled to secure what could have been a crucial three points in their figҺt for Champions League qualification, reports the Express.
Rashford has copped heavy criticism for his lacklustre efforts in United’s latest setback. One moment that irked many fans was when he allowed Palmer to easily advance the ball past him in the 85th minute, which was caught on camera as footage went viral on Friday.
Chelsea staged an extraordinary ιnjury time comeback against Manchester United
One fan wrote: “Rashford does need to go too. A player half-a***d jogging, playing as a striker for Manchester United, is simply unacceptable. Bare minimum you expect is work rate and he does not provide this.”
A second wrote: “He’s literally like this week in week out, IDK how more people haven’t clocked it.” Despite Rashford trying to debunk claims about his commitment to United in an article for The Players’ Tribune in February, fans based on his displays have formed a less favourable perception.
Marcus Rashford is losing the support of the Man Utd fans
Even football greats Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand conveyed concern over Rashford’s body language implying something might be amiss. The brother of United’s No10 took to social media to call out Neville just hours before the Chelsea match, drawing further unwanted attention to the player.
