Liverpool’s slim chances of winning the title diminished significantly when they settled for a disheartening draw.
The culmination of their season’s decline was epitomized by Mo Salah engaging in a heated argument with Jurgen Klopp on the sideline, just moments before being brought on as a substitute in the latter stages of the match.
Liverpool’s title hopes appear to be over after a 2-2 draw with West Ham
Michail Antonio secured a draw for West Ham United.
Jurgen Klopp’s team have again overturned a deficit to take a 2-1 lead in the final moments of the match at the London Stadium.
However, Michail Antonio scored a header that resulted in the visitors being two points behind leaders Arsenal, despite having played an additional game, following a week filled with misfortune.
All the components of Liverpool’s unsatisfactory conclusion to Klopp’s farewell season were evident.
For the 18th time in 35 league games, Jarrod Bowen scored a goal for West Ham from a set-piece immediately before half-time, putting the other team in a position of owing money.
Andy Robertson equalized shortly after the start of the second half, and they took the lead thanks to an own goal by Alphonse Areola.
However, they failed to capitalize on favorable opportunities to secure a decisive victory against the Hammers.
As anxiety began to grip the defenders, Bowen’s amazing pass located Antonio.
Jarrod Bowen provided the hosts with a lead at half-time.
The first half was characterized by its low-key nature, with the closest attempts at scoring coming from right-backs.
With the exception of Lucas Paqueta’s unsightly early foul on Alexis Mac Allister, for which he did not receive any disciplinary action, neither team appeared very concerned.
In the 27th minute, Liverpool believed they were awarded a penalty after Angelo Ogbonna committed a foul against Cody Gakpo. However, it was determined that Luis Diaz was in an offside position during the preceding play.
Shortly thereafter, Trent Alexander-Arnold positioned himself as the most advanced player, and West Ham goalkeeper Areola forcefully punched away the shot, marking his first notable stop of the match.
At the opposite side, Alisson successfully caught Vladimir Coufal’s powerful shot.
Diaz was the sole Liverpool player who had unwavering determination and conviction, as evidenced by his shot in the 40th minute that rebounded against Areola’s near post.
However, his team became inactive at the opposite side.
The spectators emerged promptly for the second half and swiftly achieved parity.
Diaz passed the ball to Robertson, whose seemingly unthreatening shot was not prevented from going in by Areola’s feeble right hand.
Andy Robertson brought the Reds level just after the break
The goalkeeper should have prevented Robertson’s shot from entering the goal.
Liverpool had the opportunity to take the lead shortly after, but Ryan Gravenberch made an imprudent attempt at finishing from Gakpo’s cross.
Opportunities continued to arise. Ogbonna successfully obstructed Gakpo’s attempt to score, while Areola made a save against Alexander-Arnold’s shot.
Subsequently, the Hammers goalie made an unnecessary contact with a Gravenberch shot, leading to the visitors scoring from the next corner.
Gravenberch’s shot successfully entered the net after deflecting off Ogbonna, Soucek, and ultimately Areola.
Alphonse Areola was credited with the own goal
The Frenchman denied Diaz twice, either side of Mac Allister failing to beat him with a close-range header, keeping the score at 2-1.
But then came signs of nerves at the back from Liverpool and Alisson had to push away a fierce shot from Emerson.
And moments later Bowen crossed superbly for Antonio to equalise.
Antonio ascended to a great height without encountering any obstacles in his path.
Klopp performed a triple substitution, bringing on Salah and Darwin Nunez in order to find another late victor – nevertheless, Nunez had to intervene as a mediator between his expressive teammate and the manager.
Coufal intercepted Nunez’s attempt to redirect Salah’s cross into the goal in the 84th minute. In addition, the Hammers experienced additional instances of anxiety, especially when Salah made a break and Harvey Elliott hit the crossbar.
Nevertheless, Klopp will not be victorious in his final tournament, and Liverpool will not be able to stage a late comeback on this occasion.
