11/10 TALENT: Liverpool plotting move for £42m ace who’d make Trent Alexander-Arnold click in midfield

Some of Europe’s biggest teams are competing with FSG to sign this young star.

Arne Slot, the manager of Liverpool, must have paid close attention to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s performance in midfield for England on Sunday night at Euro 2024. The vice-captain of the Reds had a strong but not spectacular game.

Alexander-Arnold has played right back for most of his professional career and has long been thought of as one of the best ball-spreading specialists in football. Gary Neville, a football commentator, called his range of distribution “world-class.”

The Three Lions played slowly and disjointedly as a whole, but Alexander-Arnold made a few mistakes that led critics to complain about what they thought were defence problems.

That wasn’t the case. The 25-year-old had a good game, but he was just one of many skilled players on the England team who didn’t come up with their best.

Slot will have noticed. Alexander-Arnold will likely play a lot in the middle of the pitch for the Dutchman at Anfield. So that the Scouse-born superstar can join the game, will Liverpool need to get a better holding player than Wataru Endo?

Without a doubt, important questions. Liverpool, on the other hand, might find that the problem is with the defence. Liverpool needs to get stronger at the back, and they have a goal with the right profile for Alexander-Arnold to do well as the engine room’s oil.

Liverpool is putting together an exciting defence

Mundo Deportivo in Spain says that Liverpool’s €50 million (£42 million) offer for Lille centre back Leny Yoro was turned down. Real Madrid is also getting ready to make an offer for the teenager, and it seems likely that he will move to the Spanish city.

David Ornstein of The Athletic reported last week that Liverpool and Manchester United are interested in the Frenchman. This proves that the rumours are true.

Yoro’s deal ends in a year, so Lille will probably try to get rid of him while they still can. Liverpool may have a real chance to get a huge talent if Real decide not to pay for him this summer.

A look at Leny Yoro’s 23/24 season

The 2022–23 season was Yoro’s first season with Lille. He started eight Ligue 1 games. Zach Lowy, a reporter, called him the latest in a “treasure trove of ballers” to come from Les Dogues’ school, and he was right.

Skill scout Jacek Kulig called him “world-class material” because of how well he performs. He has such command, poise, and purpose.

The 6-foot-1 player started the 2023–24 season as a 17-year-old, but he has quickly become an important and unstoppable teammate, starting all 30 league games, scoring two goals, keeping 13 clean sheets, completing 92% of his passes, recovering the ball 3.9 times, clearing the ball 3.0 times, and winning 63% of his contested duels, according to Sofascore.

Lille's Leny Yoro in action

Liverpool would be making a statement by taking him to Anfield, where he would be the key to Slot’s defence for years to come and may even have helped Alexander-Arnold reach new heights in midfield.

Alexander-Arnold should choose Yoro because
Alexander-Arnold would be a great fit for Yoro. Even though he is very talented, he makes his name by hiding and staying out of dangerous situations. Yoro seems a little sleepy but is actually very sharp. He is very good at figuring out where things are and where they are in space, and he’s also a great passer.

As of last year, Yoro’s pass completion rate put him in the top 7% of centre backs in Europe’s top five games. Now, why does this matter for Alexander-Arnold?

Well, the Three Lions star will need a rock-solid defence to put the doubters to rest and show that he can keep up his high level of technical skill ten or twenty metres away from where he usually plays.

Antonio Mango, a journalist and U23 scout, may have said that he sees “Van Dijk in him,” but Yoro’s skills are unique and coming together at an amazing rate.

There’s no doubt that Liverpool will make a move if Yoro does become available. Even though Real Madrid has the upper hand, the game is still not over.
