This may have been caused by Colombian fans in the stands provoking the Uruguayan players who were losing to walk off the pitch. In the past, gangs of Colombian fans frequently started fights with groups of Uruguayan fans at the Bank of America Stadium, which drew over 70,000 spectators.
The altercation between some Colombian supporters and Uruguayan athletes
It took some time for the matter to be effectively resolved. The Uruguayan team’s players, supporters, and other members were severely hurt in the altercation, according to El Pais, the country’s news agency.
The fight also involved Felipe Cotelo, the press officer, and Jorge Giordano, the director of the Uruguayan squad. Uruguayan player Manuel Ugarte had to go to the stands in the meantime to tend to the injuries his relatives sustained from odd things hurled by supporters. The vast majority of Colombian supporters attacked several Uruguay fans throughout the fight, causing multiple serious injuries.
In the meantime, security personnel and Uruguayan team members removed striker Nunez to the changing room after he rushed into the stands to brawl with Colombian fans in an attempt to prevent additional problems.
Nunez had numerous chances to score in the 2024 Copa America semifinals, but he sadly missed them. This 25-year-old player helped the Uruguayan squad to two goals during the group stage, but the home team was unable to advance to the final, which was held at Bank of America Stadium, due to their defeat in the knockout stages.
