The Dutchman has returned to Man Utd as part of Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff refresh, despite previously managing PSV.

As the Red Devils faithful will be more than aware, Van Nistelrooy knows a thing or two about goalscoring.

The 48-year-old netted 150 goals in 219 games for United, while he also netted 64 for Real Madrid, 77 for PSV, 17 for Hamburg, 14 for Heerenveen and five for Malaga across his career.

And it is hoped that he can help to bring the young forward line at Ten Hag’s disposal to life next season.

The first striker the Dutchman has the chance to work with is 26-year-old Rashford, who endured a tough campaign where he netted only eight goals in 43 games last season.

This is in stark contrast to the season before, when he became the first Man Utd player to score 30 goals in a season since Robin van Persie.

This came under the tutelage of Benni McCarthy, who left the club this summer as part of the backroom reshuffle.

Van Nistelrooy was seen in discussion with the England forward – who missed out on Euro 2024 – ahead of Man Utd’s first pre-season game against Rosenborg.

And fans were left excited at the possible impact of Van Nistelrooy’s coaching on the forward for the upcoming season.

One fan said: “Marcus Rashford under Ruud Van Nistelrooy is going to be a different animal…”

A second said: “We’re going to unleash a monster next season.”

A third said: “I can’t wait to see Rashford back again.”

Another said: “We are eating good.”

A fifth added: “It’s going to be scary but not for us.”

However, Man Utd fell to a 1-0 defeat in that game, with Ten Hag blasting the performance as “not good enough”.

Rashford featured for the entirety of the first half against the Norwegian team, who are in the middle of their regular season.

He showed some bright signs but was ultimately unable to help create a dangerous attacking chance.

The likes of Rasmus Hojlund and new-boy Joshua Zirkzee will link up with the squad following their extended holidays as a result of their participation in Euro 2024 for Denmark and the Netherlands respectively.
