Pepe has 141 caps for Portugal, behind only Ronaldo (211) and Joao Moutinho (146). Along with the two teammates mentioned above, Pepe was a member of the Portuguese generation that won Euro 2016. His final match in his career was when Portugal lost to France in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 on penalties – a tournament in which he participated as the oldest player.
After the tournament in Germany, there were rumors that the 41-year-old midfielder would retire. Yesterday, he posted a 33-minute video, announcing his decision. In it, Pepe gave many thanks to those who supported him throughout his career.
“I don’t know what to say other than thank the presidents who bet on me and believed that I could do well. I also thank the staff of every club I’ve played for, they are the soul of every team. And I thank everyone behind the scenes who have always supported me. A hug to everyone,” said Pepe.
At club level, Pepe’s peak was 10 seasons with Real Madrid, winning three La Liga titles, three Champions Leagues and two FIFA Club World Cups. In 2019, he returned to Porto, where he remained until his retirement. Last year, Pepe became the oldest player to score in the Champions League with a goal against Antwerp in the group stage.
Pepe is known for his aggressive style of play, having received a total of 17 red cards and 212 yellow cards in his career.
