De Ligt, 25, becomes the club’s third signing of the summer after the arrivals of Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee.
He has insisted that manager Erik ten Hag will be able to get the best out of him at Old Trafford.
The Dutch defender said: “As soon as I heard that Manchester United wanted me, I felt an excitement about the opportunity for a new challenge at such an historic club.
“In the conversations that followed, I was impressed by the vision that the football leadership set out, and the role they saw for me in it.
“Erik ten Hag shaped the early stages of my career, so he knows how to get the best out of me and I cannot wait to work with him again.
“I know what it takes to succeed at the highest level, and I’m determined to continue that record at this special club.”
The announcement of fellow Bayern star Noussair Mazraoui, 26, quickly followed as he will replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has joined West Ham.
The deal to sign De Ligt is believed to be around £45million, while Mazraoui’s signature cost just £15m.
Mazraoui said: “It’s an incredible feeling to be a Manchester United player, and I cannot wait to walk out at Old Trafford wearing the red shirt.
“I know that I’m joining the club at an exciting time; everyone I’ve spoken to has the same ambition for us to win trophies together and I can feel the determination to achieve that.”
The two players have signed from Bayern Munich
While Mazraoui’s contract is set to expire in June 2028 with an option to extend, De Ligt’s is set to expire in June 2029 with the possibility to extend it by one year.
Both guys were teammates at Ajax and spent multiple seasons in the Dutch capital playing for Ten Hag.
They will now be hoping to slot straight into the starting XI when United welcome Fulham to Old Trafford on Friday night.
Andre Onana, Antony, and Lisandro Martinez were also signed by Ten Hag, meaning that his team now includes five former Ajax players.
United’s connections to the Netherlands have been further cemented with the summer purchase of Euros standout Zirzkee.
Rene Hake has welcomed fan favorite Ruud van Nistelrooy as one of Ten Hag’s new aides.
The team revealed its new signings a few days after United’s loss to Man City in the Community Shield due to penalties.
