The Manchester United legend was “disappointed, angry, surprised” by a 4-0 thumping at Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship opener.

It certainly wasn’t the football – as Plymouth could easily have lost by twice the huge and humbling margin by which they were blown aside.

Ex-Birmingham and Derby chief Wayne, 38, saw Plymouth fail to create a proper chance as the Owls tore the visitors apart.

He said afterwards: “I think the basics of the game was not good enough and for me that’s not acceptable.

“Whether that’s getting to the ball, tackling, being aggressive and staying with runners.

“Sheffield Wednesday were one of the best last season at crosses and cutbacks and it was four goals from crosses and cutbacks, which we worked on throughout the week, so I’m really disappointed.”
