In their second Nations League group match, Portugal was behind 1-0 after just seven minutes of play due to a header from former United player Scott McTominay.

Portugal increased the stakes in an effort to draw even, but the Tartan Army’s tough defense mainly stopped them.

Nine minutes into the half, Fernandes produced a brilliant moment when he struck the ball into the bottom corner with his first attempt from outside the area. Although Angus Gunn attempted to stop the outstanding effort from the United captain, he was unable.

It looked like both sides would have to settle for a share of the points but Cristiano Ronaldo – who came on from the bench at the break – had other ideas. The Red Devils legend tapped in the ball from close range to give the Selecao the lead in the dying embers of the match and in the process, break the hearts of Scotland fans.
