The round of international matches on Sunday included six Liverpool players.
Portugal, led by Diogo Jota, defeated Andy Robertson’s Scotland team 2-1 in their UEFA Nations League match in Lisbon. The hosts overcame a deficit.
Ben Doak was brought on as a late substitution for Scotland, while Jota and Robertson both started and finished the match, which was decided by a late goal from Cristiano Ronaldo.
After forcing a few early corners, Andy Robertson set up Kenny McLean for a dangerous cross, which gave Clarke’s team the lead. McTominay headed home from six yards out, timing his run perfectly as he slipped past the rear of the home defence.
Clarke’s side buckled under the cosh right away. Even though there were a few close calls in the first half, Portugal was kept at bay primarily by Scott McKenna’s superb penalty-box defence.
Rafael Leao threatened and set up Diogo Jota by consistently outmuscled Anthony Ralston.
Portugal, understandably, had almost total possession of the ball after the opening goal, and the Tartan Army was resolved to fight for their lives. In the first half, they stopped 16 shots, the most in 45 minutes since 2012.
However, their defensive efforts were undone early in the second half when Bruno Fernandes levelled the score with a lovely first-time goal assisted by Rafael Leao into the bottom corner, albeit with the assistance of some dubious goalkeeping from Scotland’s top scorer, Angus Gunn.
After scuttling in to meet a tease from Nuno Mendes from close range, the Al-Nassr striker scored his 901st goal in his career to win the match for his team. There was also time for a classic Ronaldo winner off the bench.
Jota was a constant menace in the box when Cristiano Ronaldo was not playing in this game, but he nevertheless missed the early opportunity to give his country an equaliser. The Liverpool player has won 5/10 duels, made 1 tackle, made 4/4 successful dribbles, and 9 touches in the opposition area.
On the day Andy Robertson earned his 76th cap, he tied Paul McStay for the joint-fifth most caps earned by a Scottish international. moved forward effectively, but he didn’t present the same threat from set pieces or dead balls as usual. Soon after the restart, he was scheduled for a late challenge on Neves. Significant stoppage-time clearing as Portugal attempted to score a third goal
The left-back for Liverpool has won two thirds of the matches they have played in, recovered four times, cleared three times, and made 19 out of 30 (63%) accurate passes.
Conor Bradley played the entire ninety minutes of Northern Ireland’s 1-0 away loss to Bulgaria elsewhere in the Nations League, but he was not as effective as usual.
And in the U18 division, Trey Nyoni scored once more to help England draw 1-1 with France before triumphing in the ensuing penalty shootout in the Lafarge Foot Avenir Tournament final.
Carter Pinnington, a defender for Reds Academy, also made his Young Lions debut.
