Chelsea criticised for letting Raheem Sterling join Arsenal

Graeme Souness was unhappy to see Chelsea let Raheem Sterling join Arsenal, while also bringing in Jadon Sancho from MU.

After publicly stating that Raheem Sterling was not up to the task, manager Enzo Maresca ruled the England international out of his plans at Chelsea. Arsenal seized the opportunity to sign the experienced Englishman on loan until the end of the season.

Arsenal only have to pay around £100,000 in wages to Sterling, meaning Chelsea still have to pay the remaining £225,000 a week to the player. Graeme Souness fears that this decision is a serious mistake by Chelsea, saying:

“Sterling has suddenly become surplus to requirements at Chelsea and has to go. I think Arsenal have got a Sterling who is determined, angry and needs to prove himself. I have criticised Chelsea’s spending and direction, but I think they have created a monster for themselves.

These players will leave for next to nothing, and they will have to pay to let them go. Jadon Sancho, who they brought in to replace him, is not as good as him. Chelsea will pay the price for letting Sterling go to Arsenal.”

Former Watford striker Troy Deeney believes the addition of Sterling is a positive sign for the Gunners, and having an experienced player in the squad will strengthen the Gunners’ chances of winning the Premier League this season.

Deeney said: “ The addition of Sterling is a big advantage for Arsenal. He has won the Premier League, he has learned a lot from Pep Guardiola at Man City. Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, both of whom play on the left, can be completely outplayed by Sterling, if he takes his chances.”
